Let’s be honest—figuring out what everyone’s going to wear for family photos can feel like a full-time job. Between kids with opinions (or none at all), busy schedules, and trying not to look like one big matching polo ad… it’s a lot. But here’s the thing: it doesn’t have to be stressful. I promise.

As a Northern Virginia photographer who works with a lot of families - and a mom who has outfit planned for her own family photos -  I totally get how overwhelming it can feel. That’s why I always suggest starting with your outfit first, mama. Pick something you feel good in—something that feels like you. A flowy dress, a cozy sweater with jeans, whatever makes you feel confident and comfortable. Because when you feel good, it shows in your photos.

Once you’ve got your outfit picked, use that as the base to build the rest of the family’s look. Go for colors that work well together but don’t match perfectly. Think soft neutrals, earthy tones, light blues, warm browns, and gentle pastels. Skip the neon, super busy prints, and big logos—those can be a little loud on camera.
