As a Northern Virginia family photographer, one of the biggest things I pay attention to — before we even start our session— is light. The way your session is lit plays a huge role in how your final photos will look and feel. From warm and dreamy to harsh and shadowy, lighting can completely change the vibe. So let’s talk about it.
Natural Light Is My Best Friend
I shoot all my family, couples, maternity, and newborn sessions using natural light — that lovely glow from the sun that gives your photos a soft, organic feel. Natural light helps create those dreamy tones, creamy skin, and true-to-life colors. It also helps me capture real emotion without the distractions of flash or studio lights.
Golden Hour = Magic
You’ve probably heard photographers talk about “golden hour” — it’s the hour just after sunrise or just before sunset. And yes, it really is that magical. The light is softer, warmer, and lower in the sky, which means fewer harsh shadows and more of that golden, glowy magic that makes skin tones look amazing and moments feel extra dreamy.
Midday Sun? Not Always Our Friend
Shooting in the middle of the day can be tricky. The sun is high and bright, which can lead to harsh shadows, squinting, and uneven lighting. That doesn’t mean we can’t make it work — it just takes a little more strategy. If we need to shoot earlier in the day, I’ll find shaded spots or use backlighting tricks to make sure you still get beautiful, flattering images.
Cloudy Days = A Hidden Gift
Here’s a secret: overcast skies are actually great for photos. The clouds act like a giant diffuser, softening the light and giving your images a cozy, even tone. So don’t worry if the forecast looks gray — we can still get gorgeous shots without harsh shadows or blown-out highlights.
Lighting Sets the Mood
Whether we’re going for soft and glowy, bright and playful, or something in between — the lighting plays a huge role in how your photos feel. That’s why I’m so intentional about when we shoot. You don’t have to think about it too much — I’ll guide you through the best timing based on the season, the weather, and your family’s schedule.
At the end of the day, light is everything. As your photographer, it’s my job to chase the best light and guide you through it — You just show up, be present with your people, and I’ll take care of the rest. If you’re planning your next family session and wondering about timing, feel free to reach out — I’m always happy to help pick the perfect time to catch that glow.
With love and light,
Nikki
